unable to hear clear sound of your cell phone

Can't hear phone calls unless it's through rear speaker or headphones

How do I solve the problem of not being able to hear phone calls unless I'm on "speakerphone" or have a set of headphones plugged in?

I think the problem started a few days ago when I was listening to some music through the headphone jack. Ever since then (I don't use the phone much, so I'm not certain) I haven't been able to take or make a call without using speakerphone mode, or plugging in some headphones. When I unplug the headphones, I can't hear anything through the front (screen side) speaker that's normally used for phone conversations.

I've tried plugging in and unplugging a set of headphones over and over again, hoping it would switch back. But, I haven't had any luck. I've tried a hard reset as well, and that hasn't helped me either. I'm willing to open it up and see if I can fix it, but not sure what I'm looking for. So, I'm hoping someone can help out. If all else fails, I have an EVO 4g I can use until I'm due for a new phone.
I'm sure this has happened to others before. But, searching for "phone speaker" doesn't bring up much useful stuff (I'm not good at searching the right terms I'm sure)..

solution :
please take a pin slowly clear the dust of the ear piece steel cover and wrap the pin slowly . please do not put the pin in side of the steel mesh.just touch the steel mesh and the clear the dust and dial 123 or 121 to listen the sound.OK its clear...

Speed Up Your Android Smart Phones in Under 5 Minutes

Speed Up Your Android Phone

You used to love your Android handset, but now that it has slowed down considerably, the bloom is off the rose. When you hit the home button or launch a new app, it takes what seems like an eternity to switch to the new task or back to the desktop. Maybe your Android phone has become so slow that letters appear a second or two after you type them. Fortunately, you can rekindle the romance and speed up your Android phone in under 5 minutes if you use these simple tips. Talk about a quickie!
1. Clear Your App Cache (30 seconds)
Over time, your programs write to the app cache on your phone and eat up precious system resources while slowing everything down. You can clear the cache on any individual app by visiting its property page in the Settings menu and tapping the clear cache button, but with dozens of apps on most phones, it could take an eternity to do this manually.

Clear Cache Settings

App Cache Cleaner, a free app, makes it easy to delete the cache on all your apps at once with just a couple of taps. After installing and launch App Cache Cleaner, simply tap Clear All and you’re done.

Cache Cleaner

Of course, the cache will fill  up again over time, and you’ll want to delete it again. App Cache Cleaner has an Auto Clear feature. If you enter its settings menu, tap Auto Clear Interval and select a duration, it will automatically clear the cache on a regular basis. However, this means that the app needs to run in the background.

Auto Clear Interval in App Cache Cleaner

Installing and using App Cache Cleaner for the first time should take around 30 seconds.
2. Disable or Uninstall Unused Apps (60 seconds)

You may not know it, but many of the apps you never even use may be running in the background, eating up precious system resources. From the app that you tried for 5 minutes last month to the shopping app that came preloaded on your phone, every unused app has the potential to weigh your phone down. It’s easy to uninstall apps you’ve downloaded yourself, but crapware is a little harder to dispose of.

If you have rooted your phone, you can completely remove every trace of your preloaded apps. If not, you can still disable those apps through the settings menu. It should take about 10 seconds to uninstall or disable each app you don’t want. It should take you approximately one minute to get rid of 6 apps, longer if you have more crapware to dump.

Downloading the Lightning Launcher, and setting it to run as your default should take 30 seconds.
4. Remove Unnecessary Widgets and Shortcuts (30 seconds)

Even with a speedy App Launcher installed, your phone will use more memory the more widgets and shortcuts it has in memory. Look through your desktops for widgets you don’t absolutely need and remove them by long pressing and dragging them off screen.

Remove a Widget

A number of phones with widgets that advertise services such as media stores or news services. Unless you really want to look at a list of hot YouTube videos or Google Play Books on your home screen every day, remove these.

Dragging half a dozen shortcuts and widgets off  of your desktops should take 30 seconds.
5. Limit or Disable Background Data (10 to 60 seconds)

Your email, your Gmail, your Facebook, your Twitter and your backup app all want to ping the Internet for data on a regular basis. All that syncing not only eats up your battery, but also takes up system resources and slows your device down.

There are some services you may want to sync in real time, but there are others you can check manually. For example, if you don’t need to be alerted the moment you get a Facebook mention or receive an email to your personal account, you can prevent those from connecting in the background.

To disable background data for all apps:

    Navigate to Settings.
    Tap Data usage.
    Select Data Usage
Launch the context menu by tapping the three dots in the upper left corner of the screen or hitting the menu button (on Samsung and LG phones).
    Select Data Usage
Toggle Autosync data to off and tap Ok on the warning that comes up.
    Select Autosync Data

To disable background data for Gmail, Google+ and other Google Services:

Navigate to Settings. You can get to the Android settings menu from the notification drawer or apps menu.
    Tap on Google under accounts.
Tap the Account You Want to Stop From Syncing
Tap the account name.  If the sync icon next to the account name is green, it has sync permission. If it is gray, syncing is already disabled.
    Select Your Gmail account
Toggle all types of data syncing to off, including email, contacts and calendar.
    Toggle Sync to Off

To turn off background data in other apps such as Facebook or the standalone email client,  you must go directly into their settings’ menus and find the option to never update or update manually. Disabling all your background at once should take just 10 seconds, but if you want to manually disable Gmail, Facebook and email client autosync separately, this process could take as long as a  minute.
Depending on how many apps you need to uninstall and services you wish to disable, you could finish speeding up your phone in as little as 2 minutes and 40 seconds. That’s a very small time investment to make your smartphone snappier.

Recovery Data from broken memory card

How to Recover Data From a Dead or broken memory card

If the components in your drive are still functioning, you can recover the data yourself. If there's mechanical damage, send it to the pros. PM's complete guide to getting your files back.

so I have been having problems with my SD card. I was downloading music last night and it was working perfectly. Then I put my phone on the charger & when I woke up this morning there was a notification on my phone that said the card was unexpectedly removed. The SD card was in the phone the whole time & for some odd reason my phone can't read it (even though I ejected it & put it back in). I know it's not the phone acting up because I tried it with another SD card & that one worked perfectly fine. So what I want to know is what could have caused my SD card to just stop working like that? & is there any possible way that I can transfer all of my data from the messed up card to brand new card?

CardRecovery is the most focused of the applications reviewed here: It exists mainly to recover files from memory cards used in cameras. The only file types it works with are JPG and RAW-format image files, and video and audio files (e.g., AVI, MPG, MOV, MP3, WAV). It will not search for documents, archive formats, some image formats (such as Photoshop or PNG) and other day-to-day file types.

CardRecovery
CardRecovery Click to view larger image.

On the plus side, CardRecovery offered the best detection of CR2 files I found. In addition, its wizard interface made the recovery process quite easy. To begin a scan, just enter a drive letter, a camera brand (optional) and/or a file type (also optional), and a destination folder in which to save the recovered files.

The results of the scan are shown incrementally, although there's no preview mode during the scan, which makes it harder to tell if a given file is in fact what you're looking for without stopping the scan. A full scan of each of my 8GB devices took just under 10 minutes.

Once the scan's complete, you can preview JPGs (but only JPGs) and the program window can't be resized, so you can't ever see more than six thumbnails on the screen at once. This makes it a little harder to deal with RAW-format files, especially since file names aren't recovered: It might be easier to just recover everything and sort it out later.

Because CardRecovery can only work with devices that have a drive letter, it may not be of much use if you're dealing with a card whose partition information is damaged and therefore can't be assigned a drive letter. (PhotoRec, in contrast, can work with any device even if there's no partition data.)

CardRecovery offers a free trial version that will scan media and find lost files, but you must buy the full version to recover them.

CardRecovery download is less than 1 MB and you may get it in less than two minutes. Run the downloaded executable file and follow the instructions to install it to your computer. Then launch it from the Start Menu -> Programs -> CardRecovery. CardRecovery has three steps to complete the recovery.

  • Step 1: Select your camera brand and file type to recover (photo/video/audio).

  • Step 2: CardRecovery will scan your CF Card for lost files.

  • Step 3: CardRecovery will display all the recovered pictures in thumbnails to allow you to select the desired pictures before saving.

Usually, in less than 10 minutes, you will get back all or most of your lost photos from the CF Card using the software. Using Card Recovery is safe because it performs read-only operations on your source card and it saves the recovered pictures to a destination folder you specify.
CF Card Recovery Tips:

1. For a damaged or file system corrupted CF Card, Windows may prompt you to format the CF Card when it attempts to read and access the card. Please ignore that message and do not format it before you recover the lost photos.

2. To avoid possibly overwriting, do not take more pictures on the same memory card before you recover them. But if you have done that, try CardRecovery and it may still be able to recover the remainder pictures in most cases, but the pictures that were written over are unrecoverable.

cf card reader3. When you connect your digital camera to your computer, it may not appear as a drive letter in "My Computer", an external CF Card reader is needed. It will allow CardRecovery to access your memory card and recover the lost pictures. Some new desktops and laptops may already build in card reader.

Bottom line

If quickly recovering data from cameras is a priority, CardRecovery might be well worth the $40. Since the trial version allows you to preview recovered files, you can try that first to see if it suits your needs.

Windows 10 review: hands on with Windows 10
- the positive return of the Start Menu and other Desktop UI features
FREE upgrade for Windows users
Manufacturer: Microsoft
By Matt Egan | PC Advisor | 21 January 15
As the Windows 10 release grows nearer, here's what we think of its first take on Windows 10, the Technical Preview, in our Windows 10 hands-on review.

Tonight Microsoft will unveil the Windows 10 Consumer Preview. Here's what we thought of its first take on Windows 10, the Technical Preview, in our Windows 10 hands-on review. For more details follow our Windows 10 event live blog and video stream from 5pm (UK time) and check out our Windows 10 UK release date, price and new features round-up.

Windows 10 review: what is Windows 10?

Microsoft in late 2014 took the wraps off the Technical Preview of its next Windows operating system, and in doing so it took everyone by surprise. We expected the next generation of Windows: we just didn't expect it to be called Windows 10. None the less here is Windows 10: the next Windows OS for PCs and laptops, smartphones and tablets . And, indeed, an OS for servers and all points inbetween.

Microsoft execs said that Windows 10 would be built from the ground up for a world in which mobile- and cloud computing are key. They also told us that Microsoft was committed to making Windows 10 friendly for the enterprise, ideal for keyboard and mouse users, but also optimised for touch. Oh, and Windows 10 will put the same interface on devices with displays ranging in size from 4in to 80in. 'One product family, one platform, one store,' says Microsoft.

Given the lukewarm reaction to compromised Windows 8, these seem like bold claims. They are probably necessary. (See also: Windows 10 Technical Preview launch as it happened.)

Also necessary is Microsoft's decision to make Windows 10 the most beta-tested product it has ever released. Windows 10 Technical Preview will be available to everyone who wants to test it from today - October 1 2014. Given that we don't expect it to launch until the middle of next year, that is a longer test period than we have previously seen. And the version of Windows that Microsoft is sharing is very far from the final code. Microsoft tells us to expect the Charms to change, for instance.

Critically the Start Menu contains standard Windows software and Windows Apps. Modern UI apps. So you can use those apps from within the Desktop area. Hopefully this removes some of the pointless division in Windows on X86 systems. It should also help Microsoft make good on its claim that Windows 10 will feel familiar to Windows 7 users. But we are a long way from that just now.

All of which means that this article is very far from a final Windows 10 review. More of a flavour of what to expect. As yet there is no music, IE or video to be found. We're guessing that won't be the case come launch in 2015. We brought you live coverage of the Windows 10 launch event, and our colleague Mark Hachman - he works for our sister title PCWorld.com - spent some time getting hands on with Windows 10 Technical Preview, and gave us detailed thoughts on some of the new features. We share some of them here with you in no particular order. You can get all the hard facts on Windows 10 in our article: Windows 10 release date, price, features. The next version of Windows will run on everything: smartphones, tablets, laptops and PCs.

Windows 10 review

Windows 10 review: search improvements

Personally I think that universal search in Windows 8 is a much-undervalued feature. Searching to load up apps and files is much more efficient than navigating via apps and file systems. And going by the Technical Preview Microsoft has made strides in this area.

Because, quite simply, Windows 10 sees a search button added to the taskbar. This in one important move one of the few important aspects of the Windows 8 Start page is pulled into the Desktop. Microsoft officials tell us that Search and File Explorer now displays your recent files and frequently visited folders. This should make finding files you've worked on faster and easier. It's difficult to test this on a demo machine, but we look forward to trying it out on the Technical Preview just as soon as we can get it installed.

Windows 10 review: Snap Assist and windowed apps

With Snap Assist every app in Windows 10 can be dynamically resized in a window. And unlike in Windows 8 - where a snapped app takes up half the screen - with Windows 10 up to four apps can be snapped per screen. This has the potential to be a killer productivity app - true multitasking in a single window.

Even better, Snap a document to one side of the screen, and Snap Assist will suggest others that you may wish to open. Snap an app and Windows 10 suggests another, similar app that you might want to snap next to it. Mark was impressed with his brief test: "The feature is intended to save you the hassle of hunting about through menus to actually construct a virtual desktop. Time will tell whether these suggestions will prove useful, but it's a good start.

"You can see, however, that a number of different features - Snap Assist, windowed apps, virtual desktops - all flow somewhat organically into one another. I'm honestly interested to see what difference they make in my own daily workflow."

Windows 10 review

Windows 10 review: the all-new Start Menu

Now we get on to the big stuff. The Start Menu is back, back, back baby. But this time it is improved, and it may even make Windows apps useful. Look to the left and you'll see a list of frequently used apps and shortcuts to PC settings. Here you will also find documents and pictures folders. At the bottom we see an 'All apps' shortcut.

And Microsoft has retained the functionality of the Windows 8 Start screen over on the right, with resizeable Live Tiles so that you can immediately check unread mail or Calender appointments. The Start Menu is customisable - you can resize it, and rearrange the tabs, You can also revert to the Windows 8 Start page, should you wish to. Who will wish to?

Mark wasn't impressed with the Windows 10 Start Menu's looks, but he can see the beauty within: "Aesthetically, it looks like someone surgically conjoined the Windows 7 and Windows 8 experience. Move past that inelegance, however, and it's darn useful." (See also: Windows 10 release date, price, features. The next version of Windows will run on everything: smartphones, tablets, laptops and PCs.)

Windows 10 review: Task View, virtual desktops, ALT-TAB

Another useful and visual productivity enhancer is the way that Task View allows you to create a kind of multi-monitor setup within a single monitor. As with previous versions of Windows you can use ALT-TAB to quickly shuffle between windows. The killer difference here is the new Task View button. Third from the left in the Windows Taskbar is the Task View button. Press it - or hit Windows+TAB - and you will see an array of 'virtual desktops', virtual displays into which you can snap multiple apps. So you could keep your email and web browser on one Desktop that you hide away when you are working on an Excel spreadsheet.

Solutions for Memory Card Error and Problems

Troubleshoot:

A Memory Card is used by digital camera to store the photos it takes. Popular memory cards include the SD card, CF card, xD-Picture card and Memory Stick. For some reason, memory cards may get damaged during a power shortage, or removal of the memory card on picture shooting or viewing, or other various and unknown reasons. Usually, you will see error messages like "memory card error", "card locked", "card error", or an error code on your camera screen and the valuable pictures on the memory card could disappear and be lost. In some cases, your camera or Windows may prompt you to re-format the memory card and refuse to take new pictures or view old pictures.

Solution:

Once you have damaged your memory card, it is highly recommended to stop further operations on the memory card (e.g. taking new pictures, or deleting or formatting the memory card). Data recovery software like "CardRecovery" is able to recover the lost pictures in most cases.

First, you need to confirm your memory card can appear as a drive letter in "My Computer", which will allow recovery software to access and recover the lost photos. You may try to connect your digital camera to your computer, if a new drive letter appears in "My Computer", this is normal. Otherwise, you need to prepare an USB card reader. There are many card readers available on the market (e.g. SanDisk and Kingston). You can buy one from Amazon or BestBuy.

Then, download and install CardRecovery on your computer. Launch it from the Start Menu -> Programs -> CardRecovery. You select the drive letter of your memory card, and the destination folder to save the recovered files. CardRecovery will scan your memory card and locate the recoverable pictures. The process is quick and easy. Usually it takes less than 15 minutes.

Can I Re-use the Corrupted Memory Card?

For data protection, CardRecovery performs read-only operations on your memory card and it does not change the data on the memory card, so it does not repair or fix the memory card. If you need to, AFTER you have recovered your lost photos from the card, you may try to format the memory card before re-using it. It is suggested to perform enough read/write tests before using it again to take new pictures. If you are worried that the memory card is unstable and may cause further data loss, purchase and use a new memory card. Your valuable and irreplaceable photos are more important than memory card. A memory card is very cheap. A new 4 GB SD, CF or xD card is less than $10 USD.

Tips to Avoid Memory Card Error and Damage

Do not remove your memory card during photo saving and viewing.

Do not remove your memory card when turning on/off your camera.

Do not change your memory card when the camera is on.

Stop taking/viewing new pictures on battery low.

Use memory cards from big brands such as SanDisk, Panasonic, Sony, Kingston, Lexar, Olympus and many more.

If several different memory cards get damaged in one camera, you ought to suspect there is some issue with your digital camera.

Memory cards have a finite lifespan. A typical flash memory card unit has approximately 10,000 write/erase operations. So it is better to throw away memory cards that have been used frequently for many years.

root your Samsung Galaxy S3

So you've just bagged yourself a gleaming new Samsung Galaxy S3 and you already want to root around in Android's murky depths? Step this way chum, and let me take you through the process.
If you think of your phone as a computer, rooting is being given administrator rights -- you can edit and mess around with things that normally would be restricted, including the operating system and start-up animations, and clearing out any software pre-installed by your operator that they don't want you to get rid of. You effectively have complete control over everything on your phone.
Android fans like rooting as it lets them use fancy things like custom ROMs -- home-made operating systems -- and use powerful applications that aren't available in the Google Play store. Of course, getting rid of all the restrictions on your phone also gets rid of all the safety features too, so it's important to bear in mind the risks.
Using custom ROMs and unapproved apps can sometimes have diverse effects on your phone -- if someone sinister has built a malicious app that you install without any of the usual barriers in place, it could wreak havoc, as it will have access to all the system files that apps on unrooted phones wouldn't have.
As the core architecture of the firmware is exposed, you could also end up totally destroying crucial bits of software, resulting in your phone being completely unusable -- known as 'bricking' a device. It's therefore important that you don't attempt anything you're unsure about and always check what other people in forums such as XDA-Developers have said about the software you're trying to use.
I'll take this opportunity to point out that CNET takes no responsibility for any damage done to your phone as a result of following these steps. Got it? Good.
Step 1: Gather everything you need

First things first -- download the Samsung Kies software and make sure all the drivers for your phone on your PC are up to date. Back up all your contacts, photos and so on if you've already been using it, then disconnect your phone.
Then grab Odin 3 and the rooting software CF-Root-SGS3-v6.4.
Step 2: Extraction

Extract Odin 3 using WinRar or similar and run the install executable file to install it to your computer. Then extract the CF-Root archive file. The crucial file in here is a .TAR file which my computer confusingly showed with the same compressed file icon, causing me to try to extract it, which showed two files -- Cache.img and Recovery.img.
Galaxy S3 root TAR

If you see those, start again and extract the original archive just once. If you then open control panel > Folder Options and uncheck the 'Hide extensions for known file types' in the View tab and click apply, you'll be able to see that the file masquerading as an archive folder has the .TAR file extension. Perhaps put that file on your desktop so you know where to find it.
Galaxy S3 root folders
Step 3: Loading Odin

Open Odin. You should see that all the boxes and windows in the program are blank. Click on the PDA button in the Files [Download] box in the bottom right-hand quadrant.
Galaxy S3 root Odin

That will open a folder browser window, letting you navigate to the CF-Root-SGS3-v6.4 .TAR file you extracted previously. Double click on that and it will load in the field next to the PDA button.
Step 4: Put your phone into download mode

You'll need to set your phone to go into 'download mode', which allows for files to be, er, downloaded and run on your phone -- it's a developer thing. Turn your phone off and wait for it to completely shut down. Press and hold the volume down key, the home button and the power button all at once and wait for a few seconds.
Galaxy S3 root download mode

It will then load and ask you if you want to enter download mode by pressing the volume up button -- which you should do.
Step 5: Connect and run

When your phone's in download mode, connect it back to your PC and you should see the word 'Added' in the message box in the bottom left quadrant of Odin.
Galaxy S3 root Odin added

You should have the 'Auto Reboot' and 'Reset Time' boxes already checked. Take a deep breath and click Start.
Odin will then go through the steps to root your phone and will show a green box saying 'Pass' in the program when it's completed. Your phone should then show a black screen with scrolling text (that's the rooting process) before it reboots back into the standard operating system you know and love.
The first time I ran it, it didn't load into the root process, but instead rebooted straight into the Android OS. I simply ran step 4 again and it all worked fine.
Step 6: Congratulate yourself

When it reboots the final time it should all be done, letting you enter the wonderful world of the rooted Android phone owner. There's a whole load of stuff you can do with a rooted phone and thankfully, numerous forums around the Internet where modders get together and share tips and software, so have a scout around and see what others are up to.
If your phone is locked to a network and you want to swap to someone else -- if you want to take advantage of O2's Priority Moments rewards on its tariffs, for example -- you can now use unapproved apps to strip out the existing network limitations and use any SIM card you want.
Make sure to let me know in the comments below or over on our Facebook page how you've got on and what you're planning to do next.

Root Galaxy Note 3 On Android 4.3

No matter which Android device you own, if you count yourself as an above-average user and are interested in seriously modifying the look and feel of your device, rooting is a must. Although it needs no introduction, rooting means getting the superuser app installed on your device to get system-level access to the Linux kernel on which Android is running. Nowadays, rooting has reached a level where any new device gets a root method merely days after it becomes publicly available (or in some cases, even before that). The same applies to Samsung’s latest flagship in its Note phablet lineup, the Samsung Galaxy Note 3.
The device, which became available just last month, carries the top of the line processor, hardware and software available right now, and offers a user experience second to none in the Note lineup of devices. Supplement that with root access, and you have a pretty winning combination. Thankfully, the root for Galaxy Note 3 also comes from the renowned Chainfire, whose auto-root has served a viable, working solution for a lot of Android devices. What’s even better is that the root is available for almost all variants of the Note 3, and hence, if you have the T-Mobile or Sprint variant, you’re not excluded.

Root Samsung Galaxy S4

For new Android users, rooting an Android phone can often be an intimidating process, especially since there are so many different ways to gain root access, depending on your model and firmware version.
I've previously covered a way of doing it for the AT&T version of the Samsung Galaxy S4 that has the MF3 firmware on it, but you needed an SD card reader, unzipping software, a terminal emulator, and more. Definitely not an easy task for a first-time rooter.
However, thanks to the crafty developers at Kingo App, root can be attained with just one click now, and not just for the GS4, but for almost any Android phone on the market.

Read & Heed, Before You Proceed

You'll need to have the following components ready:
Your Samsung Galaxy S4
Micro USB cable
A Windows PC
Also be aware this rooting method does not install a custom recovery. A recovery is a software that lets you flash custom ROMs like CyanogenMod onto your phone, as well as perform system level maintenance, like backing up and restoring nandroid files. You'll have to manually install a recovery yourself if you'd like to do that.
If you have the Verizon Galaxy S4 with ME7 firmware, or AT&T Galaxy S4 with MF3 firmware, unfortunately your bootloader is locked, so you won't be able to install a custom recovery at all. Attempting to install a recovery like ClockworkMod or TWRP will likely turn those GS4 variants into nothing more than shiny, expensive paperweights.
Even if your Galaxy S4's bootloader is locked, you can still attain root with this method.
Step 1: Enable USB Debugging

You'll need to have Developer options enabled, which you can easily do by following Faisal's softModder guide. You can then access Developer options by going to your GS4's Settings -> More, and it'll be the second from the bottom. Tap on it, then make sure USB debugging is checked.

Step 2: Download & Install Kingo Root on Your PC

This one-click rooting method is provided by Kingo. You can grab the PC software from their download page. The download should start within a few seconds of opening the page on your computer. If you have another device to root, Kingo probably supports it too (just make sure to check out their list of compatible devices for reference).
Once you've downloaded the file, open it up and run the installer, then open up the program.

Step 3: Connect Your GS4 to the PC

Connect your Galaxy S4 to your computer with the micro-USB cable. Kingo Root will detect it and start installing the device's drivers (if necessary).

You may be prompted to disconnect the phone for the drivers to finish installing. Go ahead and disconnect the cable, and Kingo will let you know when to reconnect it.

Keep an eye on your phone for an "Allow USB debugging?" alert. Make sure to choose OK.

Step 4: Get Ready to Root!

You should now be at this screen in Kingo:

Read through King's Root Notifications, then click the orange ROOT button when you're ready. This step may take a few minutes, and once it's successful, you should see this screen:

Click the Finish button and reboot your GS4.
Step 5: Verify Root with Root Checker

Download joeykrim's very popular Root Checker app from Google Play, which verifies whether your device has root or not.

Open up the app then tap on the Verify Root Access button. A Superuser request should pop up, so select Grant.

You'll now see the words that every softModder wants to see on their Android phone: "Congratulations! This device has root access!"

You're Rooted! Now What?

With root privileges on your device, you can now install apps and mods that require root access. One of the most popular modifications to install is the Xposed framework. It's quite simple to install, and once it's on your phone, you can add all sorts of mods and customizations.
If you have any questions, or had any trouble with this rooting method, feel free to ask for help in the discussion section below.

Zoom in tight
The Start Screen is full of nice, big, chunky tiles that represent all your apps. The tiles are easy to see in small groups, but what if you have hundreds of apps installed? Most will be hidden from view, unless you want to do a lot of scrolling. Enter the new semantic zoom feature. If youre using a touch display, simply squeeze the Start screen with two fingers to receive a birds eye view of your entire screen contents. And the feature is also available to mouse and keyboard users: Simply hold down the Ctrl button, and use your mouse wheel to zoom in and out.
Categorize your apps
Your Start screen can become a cluttered mess if you collect too many apps and other elements that have been pinned to the screen as tiles, so take advantage of built-in organization tools that let you divide everything into labeled groups.
First, drag all the tiles you want to assign to a single group to the far right-hand side of your Start screen in vacant territory; the OS should sequester the tiles together. Once you're satisfied with your assembly, use semantic zoom (described above) to get a bird's eye view of your desktop. Now right-click the group (or simply drag down on it) and select the "Name group" option on the left of the bar that appears below. Type in the name and enjoy your newly organized Start screen!
Close an application
Closing an app sounds simple enough, but you'll quickly notice that close buttons are hard to find in Windows 8. That's because Microsoft encourages us to run apps in the background where they'll take up minimal resources, but still be accessible at any time.
Nonetheless, if you insist on being rebellious, you can close an app by dragging it with your mouse or finger from the top of the screen all the way down to the bottom. As you drag, the app will miminize into a thumbnail, and when you reach the bottom it will disappear from view. Alternately, you can still close apps via Alt+F4 and through the task manager.
Centralized, contextual search
The Search function located on the Charms bar is packed with power, letting you search the directories of not only your Windows 8 machine, but also the greater Windows ecosystem. Simply choose the bucket of data you want to sift throughit could be all your installed apps, your system settings, your files, your mail messages, or even an external service like the Windows Store or Bing Mapsand then type in a keyword and hit Enter. The Search function will then return the results, perfectly contextualized for the database youve addressed
Oh, and how's this for cool: You don't even need to hit the Charms bar to access Search. From the Start screen, simply start typing, and you'll be quickly whisked to the text-entry field for search queries. Try it. It works!
Adjusting privacy settings
A lot of apps tap into very personal information by default. Indeed, your pictures, location and name are libreally woven throughout the system, and like many users you may not be comfortable trusting your machine with that much sensitive data. To adjust the settings, press (Windows) + I, and go to Change PC Settings. Select the Privacy option and personalize the settings for your personal data there.
Adjust SmartScreen settings
SmartScreen warns you before running an unrecognized app or file from the Internet. While it's helpful to be aware of a file's source, constant warnings can also get a little annoying. By default, you need an administrator's permission, but this can easily be adjusted to just a warning or no indication at all. Using the magic search function described above, type "security" at the Start screen and find the "Check security status" in the Settings tab. From this area, you can adjust various security settings, including the Windows SmartScreen.
Quick Access Menu
Right-clicking on the lower left of the screenwhether youre in the Windows 8 Start screen or in the desktopwill bring up the Quick Access Menu, which enables a direct line to many key system management chores, including Disk Management, Task Manager, Device Manager and Control Panel.
Use Windows 8 apps and your desktop simultaneously
Because the Windows 8 experience is split between new Windows 8 Store apps and old-school desktop apps, the operating system is prone to some strange behaviors. Case in point: When running a multi-monitor set-up, Windows 8 apps will consume your main screen, leaving your secondary screen running the desktop. This arrangement would seem to allow full-screen multitasking among both types of appsa modern app on the left side, a desktop app on the right sidebut this isnt the case. Indeed, as soon as you begin using the desktop on your secondary screen, the new-style Windows 8 app disappears, and your primary screen begins running the desktop.
But heres a workaround. On your primary screen, use the new Windows 8 split-screen snapping function to run the desktop and a new Windows 8 Store app together. The desktop can take up the left-hand sliver, while the Windows 8 app consumes the majority of the screen. Now use your second display for a full desktop view. In this arrangement, you can fully multi-task between new-style apps and desktop apps, and both windows will be large enough to be useful.
Startup items are now on task manager
You no longer have to run the MSCONFIG program to change startup items. Startup items now show up in a tab on Task Manager. Simply hit Ctrl+Alt+Del and select Task Manager. Click the "More details" tab at the bottom and find the Startup tab at the top.
Share and share alike
Windows 8 is Microsofts first social media-aware PC operating system. Using the Share button located on the Charms bar, you can pick any number of elements from your Windows 8 Store appssay, a location from your Maps app, a news story from the Finance app, or a even a contact from your People appand then distribute that item to friends via other Windows 8 programs.
Perhaps most conveniently, you can quickly sharing a photo via email or Twitter, or to your own SkyDrive or Windows Phone. The Share button is contextual, and the more you use it, the more youll discover which apps share with each other, and which dont. (Hint: None of your desktop apps offer sharing opportunities through the Charms menu.)
Create a picture password
Using a picture password is a fun way keep your device secure while not having to remember a complex password. To enable it, press (Windows) + I to get to the settings charm. Click "Change PC settings" at the bottom right, and go to the Users tab. Under "Sign-in options" will be the "Create a picture password" button. This will give you the option to choose any picture, and then define three gestures anywhere on the image. Your gestures can be circles, swipes and clicks.
For example, to set a picture password for the image above, you could click on the highest palm tree, draw a circle around the island, and then swipe down from the lens flare in the upper right. Just beware: The direction of each gesture matters! After confirming it a couple times, your picture password will be set.
Boot to the desktop without an app
One of biggest complaints about Windows 8 is that it boots straight to the Start screenan annoyance for many committed desktop users. The Start8 utility helps you avoid this indignity (among other cool features), but you can actually boot straight to the desktop without installing anything extra.
Go to the start screen and type in "schedule" to search for Schedule Task in Settings. Click on Task Scheduler Library to the left, and select Create Task. Name your task something like "Boot to desktop." Now select the Triggers tab, choose New and use the drop-down box to select to start the task "At log on." Click OK and go to the Actions tab, choose New and enter "explorer" for the Program/Script value.
Hit OK, save the task and restart to test it out!
Log in without a username or password
To speed up the log in process, you may want to disable the username and password log in screen. This can be done by opening the run windowwhich you can do by hitting (Windows) + Rand typing in "netplwiz" to access the User Accounts dialogue. Un-check the box near the top that says "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer." Click OK and enter the user name and password one last time to confirm your choice, and you are all set for easy access to your system.
Refresh your PC
If your system is feeling a little sluggish, it may be time for a refresh. In the past we would have to find our copy of Windows 7, back up all of our data and perform a fresh install to enjoy that back-to-factory-fresh feeling. But now Windows 8 allows you to perform a fresh install from within Windows without losing any data.
In order to perform the refresh, go to Settings and click the Change PC Settings tab near the bottom. Select the General tab and find the "Refresh your PC without affecting your files" section near the middle (you may also select "Remove everything and reinstall Windows" to get the true factory settings treatment). Select "Get started" and press "Refresh." After a few minutes the PC will restart and you will have a fresh copy of Windows 8.
Start in Safe Mode
Safe Mode is a great way to get into your system when something won't allow you to start up normally. Troubleshooting becomes a breeze when corrupted drivers and files aren't loaded that prevents a system from functioning. It used to be as easy at pressing F8 when the system starts up, but doing so with Windows 8 will take you to the Automatic Repair mode. The trick to getting back to good old fashioned Safe Mode? Hold down the Shift key and press F8 while booting up.
This takes you to the Recovery mode. Select "advanced options," then "troubleshoot," then the "advanced options" again (there are a lot of advanced options). Select "Windows Startup Settings" and finally the "Restart" button. This will reboot the computer and give you the option to boot into Safe Mode.
If you need to get into Safe Mode from within Windows, open the dialogue box ((Windows) + R) and type "msconfig" (no quote marks). Select the "Boot" tab and check the "Safe boot" box. The system will continually boot into Safe Mode until you go back and uncheck the box.
Turning Live Tiles on and off
When looking at the plethora of tiles on your Start screen, the view can get stagnant, despite all the pretty colors. This is where Live Tiles come in. They offer real-time data right on your Start screen, and you don't need to open any apps. For example, the Weather tile will show you the current conditions, and Mail will show you the subject of the latest message you've received.
You can customize which apps are live and which aren't by right-clicking on the tiles. A settings bar on the bottom will pop up with an option to turn the Live Tile on or off. Simply select the preferred option, and you're all set. Note, however, that not all apps have a live, real-time data streaming option.
Windows games folder
Currently, the games folder used in Windows 7 isnt present in Windows 8. Fear not, if you install any current-generation PC game that would regularly save to this folder, it's automatically created. For a quick way to find it, right-click on the game icon on the Start screen and choose Open file location at the bottom.
Family safety
Want to avoid some nasty surprises on your credit card? Create a separate, standard account on the device for your kids (Family Safety can't be applied to an administrator account). You can activate Family Safety by going to the Control Panel, User Accounts and Family Safety and selecting the account you would like to apply it to. From these settings you can get reports on the accounts activity, set a level of web filtering, set time limits and enforce Windows Store, game and app restrictions.
Shut down with one click
Windows 8 hides the Power button in the Settings menu, forcing a multi-step process just to shut down one's PC. But thanks to a crafty shortcut trick, you can pin a Shutdown button right to the bottom of your desktop. Here's how.
Create a shortcut on your desktop (right -click, go to New, then Shortcut). Enter "shutdown /s /t 0" (with no quotes, and, yes, that a zero not an "O") as the location of the item, and hit next. Now name the shortcut (prefereably "Shutdown") and hit Finish.
Right-click the shortcut and navigate to Properties. Choose "Change Icon" in the Shortcut tab, and OK out the warning box. Choose an icon of your choice from the list. In the screenhot above, you'll see we chose a Power button.
Right-click the shortcut again and select "Pin to Start." You can place the icon on your Start screen wherever is convenient. Hitting it will instantly shut down your computer
